The New Psycho-Cybernetics

Author: Maxwell Maltz (updated by Dan Kennedy)

Before there was NLP, before there was "mindset coaching," there was Psycho-Cybernetics. Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon, noticed something fascinating: even after successful surgery, some patients still saw themselves as ugly. The problem wasn't their face - it was their self-image.

The book also delves into the power of positive affirmations. Now, before you roll your eyes, let's get real - repeating positive statements to yourself isn't just new-age mumbo jumbo. It's about rewriting the negative scripts that play in your head on a loop. By consciously replacing them with positive affirmations, you're essentially reprogramming your mental autopilot.

The Self-Image

Maltz's central insight is that your self-image is the key to your behavior and performance. You will always act in accordance with the picture you hold of yourself in your mind. Change the picture, and you change the behavior. It's that simple - and that difficult.

The Theater of the Mind

One of the book's most powerful techniques is what Maltz calls the "Theater of the Mind." This is a visualization practice where you mentally rehearse success. Athletes, performers, and high achievers have used this technique for decades, and the neuroscience now backs it up: your brain can't fully distinguish between a vividly imagined experience and a real one.

The Servo-Mechanism

Maltz compares your subconscious mind to a servo-mechanism - a goal-seeking device that automatically steers you toward whatever target you set. If your self-image says "I'm a failure," your internal servo-mechanism will find ways to make that true. But if you reprogram it with a new self-image, it will work just as hard to make that new image a reality.

Why It Still Matters

Dan Kennedy's updated version brings Maltz's original insights into the modern era with new examples and applications. But the core message hasn't changed: your self-image is the foundation of everything. Fix that, and everything else follows.

The Bottom Line

"The New Psycho-Cybernetics" is the grandfather of modern self-help, and it still holds up. If you want to understand why you do what you do and how to change it at the deepest level, start here.
